Samsung Galaxy Note 7 may return as a refurbished or rental phone

Samsung on Monday said that it would consider selling the recalled Galaxy Note 7 units as a refurbished or rental phone "where applicable." Samsung recalled the phone -- twice -- in the fall after it was found to have the uncomfortably high tendency to overheat and catch fire, incurring an estimated cost of $3 billion. Samsung's statement addressed questions posed by environmentalists about how the company would dispose of the 4.3 million recalled units. After the second recall, Samsung scrapped the phone, and that was supposed to be end of that. The company, after all, is set to unveil its Galaxy S8 phone on Wednesday.

Samsung plans to refurbish, extract parts from recalled Galaxy Note 7 phones

March 27 (UPI) -- Following a worldwide recall of about 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, Samsung said it would refurbish some, and break down others for parts and precious metals. Samsung said Galaxy Note 7 phones that have been refurbished or that will be used as rental phones will be available depending upon consultation with regulators and phone carriers. In a three-pronged approach, the South Korea-based company will initially consider some devices to be refurbished or used as rental phones. Samsung also will attempt to salvage parts of the phone for use and the company said it would extract metals through "environmentally friendly methods." The company did not say where refurbished phones would be sold.

A new update will finally kill the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 once and for all
The last remaining Galaxy Note 7 phones that haven't been returned will finally be put out of their misery. Samsung's planning to issue a software update that'll disable remaining Note 7 phones from charging at all, according to a report from Yonhap News Agency. The drastic move to snuff out the remaining Note 7 phones shouldn't come as a surprise. In December, Samsung partnered with U.S. carriers to release a software update that would not only disable the Note 7 from charging, but also prevent it from connecting to cellular networks. Earlier this year, Samsung said 97 percent of Note 7 devices had been recalled in the U.S. and 96 percent worldwide.
