Samsung Introduces Stretchable Display

What other potential uses can you come up with for a stretchable screen? This week, Samsung unveiled the world's first stretchable touchscreen display and, well, science fiction is closer to our world more now than ever (via Mashable). Then, once the technology becomes more advanced, perhaps we could even be able to stretch the screen to make it larger. The screen is capable of stretching inwards out outwards of 12 millimeters, giving it a total range of 2.4 centimeters. We can now addstrechable displays to the list of innovations that could one day show up in future Samsung products. Assuming the stretchable prototype ever involves into a design that can be mass-produced, we expect similar marketing-related delays before it ends up contorting in the hands of consumers. And then there's the question of how to make the rest of the device stretchable, although researchers have come up with at least one design for a stretchable battery as well. But Samsung has also indicated that flooding the market with too many futuristic display options could be a bad business decision. Production difficulties are also part of what's holding up foldable displays from arriving on the mass market.
